Skyrim what happens if you attack the greybeards

But for fun I am thinking of saving the game before going through the door I have done this before and go in blasting just to see what happens. Can they be killed or does that mess up the games story line? My bows are dubble enchanted with armor worth over What can I expect?

You are given the option to tell him that Paarthurnax must die or that you are going to spare the dragon.
