The quality of cotton can be also increased in mercerization process, so that its fibres become more delicate, uniform and durable, and gain beautiful gloss, which they do not lose even during washing. If that gave bad results, I'd do the washer but lay them out to dry, and if they caused me that much grief I'd probably stop wearing them, to be honest. Too much work. Nick M Distinguished Member. It doesn't take much to care for mercerized cotton shirts and it can also easily repel stains.
